If the V-star was available when I was shopping, I may have well have gotten the bike myself, but I am quite a bit bigger and the bike would fit me well.
The comfort factor is important and if you did get a Savage you may be very happy for the first year and then wish you had the v-star. Really hard to say. The motorcycle training classes are usually held with small honda, so maybe you can use the experience with a small bike as a data point.
Have fun, be safe, and I am sure that you will use your fear as a natural defense mechanism as it is intended. Don't push yourself too fast.
